Does Resume Genius Deliver?

Here’s how the Resume Genius builder works.

You’re asked to fill in the information on your education, work experience, skills, contact details, and extra resume sections. And then comes your resume, pre-formatted and ready to download. If you select the Everest template, this may be what it looks like:

We wouldn’t call it a review if we didn’t detail both pros and cons. So here they are:

Resume Genius Review—Pros

1. Integrated Cover Letter Builder

If you’re new to the game, you might not know that you should complement your resume with a cover letter. If you’re experienced, though, you know that it’s necessary if you want to get noticed. And Resume Genius facilitates that with its built-in cover letter builder with templates matching your resume.

2. Three Download Formats Available

Whatever the format recruiters request of you, you can relax. Resume Genius provides unlimited downloads in three formats: PDF, Word, and TXT. Every of these resume formats is ATS-friendly.

3. Money Refund After 14-Day Trial Period

You ended up with a product you’re not satisfied with? Write to Resume Genius’s customer service and ask for a full refund.

4. User-Friendly Interface

If you’ve never used any of the resume builders available online, you might feel confused about the whole resume writing process. Resume Genius makes it a child’s play with their app wizard guiding you at every step of the way.

But there are some drawbacks to Resume Genius too:

Resume Genius Review—Cons

1. Only a Few Options for Customization Within the Builder

Every applicant has a different background, so resume builders must accommodate job seekers at different points in their careers. Unfortunately, Resume Genius could do better in terms of customization.

If you’re a career changer or writing an entry-level resume and you need to reorganize your resume structure, Resume Genius won’t be able to help you. The resume layout of the templates is fixed, meaning you won’t be able to move sections around to highlight your best attributes. You can’t also change the resume font. But you can still find that one resume template made for you.

2. Payment Details Are Confusing

One common complaint found in Resume Genius reviews is that customers weren’t aware that the builder costs money until they wanted to download their resume. The reason for the confusion could be that you can download your resume for free, but the fine print says you can only download it in a .txt format (not Word or PDF), which is a problem seeing PDF is the standard resume format to submit.

To get your resume in Word or PDF format, you’ll have to pay the following:

  • 14-day trial version—$2.90 ($23.90/month automatically afterward)
  • Monthly plan—$6.40 (if you choose to be billed annually at $76.80)

The good news is that if you liked any of the free resume templates outside the Resume Genius builder, you could use them to build your own resume from scratch in either GDocs or MS Word. In that case, though, you’ll need to rely on perfect resume how-to guides.

When making a resume in our builder, drag & drop bullet points, skills, and auto-fill the boring stuff. Spell check? Check. Start building a professional resume template here for free.

When you’re done, Zety’s resume builder will score your resume and tell you exactly how to make it better.

Resume Genius Templates Review

Recruiters seem to be in a rush. They only spend 7 seconds on average scanning each resume (according to HR statistics). That means your resume needs to catch their eye and then pull them in.

Let’s see what Resume Genius has to offer:

Milano

Templates play a big role in formatting your resume so that you can fit everything on one page and keep the content readable. The Milano template does its job well. Even with an extensive work history section, it fits all other sections.

As we said, Resume Genius does offer some GDocs and MS Word templates available for free. Let’s take a look. (Just keep in mind you won’t be able to use their builder to fill them in.)

Unique

This two-column resume template has all the sections needed to become a great resume. One note, though—it’s better to leave off your social media handles for most professions. If you’re applying for a position related to social media, remember to check your online presence beforehand.

The resume icons add a nice touch to this resume template. The separate sections for soft and hard skills also ensure there isn’t too much whitespace on a resume that might look empty otherwise.
